Job Description
Engineer II, Ad Engineering
As Engineer II with the Retail Media Network Ad Engineering, you will be responsible for delivering complex product features that are well-tested, scalable, and production ready. This role requires minimal oversight and expects the engineer to plan and execute coarse-grained features while breaking down large problems into manageable parts. You will support backend engineering at scale, with a solid understanding of cloud infrastructure, microservice architecture, and system performance. You will collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers while demonstrating initiative and ownership across the stack. This is a role for engineers who are eager to grow into technical leaders while contributing meaningfully to business outcomes.
This role is hybrid, which means you will work some days on site at a Best Buy location and some days virtually from home or other non-Best Buy location. The specific work arrangements vary by role and team. The recruiter or hiring manager will provide more details during the hiring process. For this role, you must be located within a drivable distance to our office in Richfield, Minnesota.
What you'll do
Design and implement application features end-to-end, collaborating with internal and external partners
Participate in planning and architecture discussions, applying design patterns and microservice best practices
Enhance internal libraries, tools, and developer workflows to improve engineering efficiency and experience
Lead and support production triage, incident response, and cross-environment troubleshooting
Drive performance optimization, load testing, and monitoring using tools like Swagger, Postman, Kibana, Grafana, Prometheus, Stratus, and GitHub Actions.
Mentor peers, foster team growth, and stay current with industry trends to introduce innovative engineering solutions
Basic Qualifications
2+ years of relevant enterprise software engineering experience at scale
2+ years of development experience with Java, Spring, REST web services, and similar technologies
2+ years of cloud experience (AWS preferred, GCP acceptable)
1+ years of experience with Postgres, Kafka, or similar technologies
1+ years of experience with tools such as Swagger, Postman, Kibana, Grafana, Prometheus, Stratus, and GitHub Actions (GHA)
1+ years of experience with test-driven development (TDD) and writing unit/integration tests
Preferred Qualifications
3+ years of relevant experience with a bachelor's degree OR equivalent relevant professional experience
3+ years of development experience with Java, Spring, REST web services, and similar technologies
Understanding of performance monitoring tools and practices, including load testing and system optimization
Understanding of state management, caching, concurrency, threading, messaging, and inter-system dependencies
Experience applying design patterns and working within microservice architecture
Strong ability to build and optimize backend systems in a cloud-native environment
Experience building highly scalable, resilient, and performant applications
Ability to collaborate effectively with product managers and cross-functional stakeholders
Experience triaging and resolving complex production issues
Advanced proficiency in system observability and operational excellence practices
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, and Git-based workflows
Experience working in a fast-paced, agile environment with production responsibilities
